Reports: Manchester United defender Rafael 'close' to Lyon switch

The 25-year-old Brazilian - who, together with identical twin brother Fabio, signed for the Red Devils from Fluminense in 2008 - has made over 100 club appearances but has ultimately struggled to stamp down a regular first-team place at Old Trafford.

He hasn’t started a Premier League game for the Red Devils since last October, having had his season ended prematurely last term after breaking his ribs in an Under-21 game.

The defender has been linked with a host of clubs this summer, with the £12.7million arrival of fellow right-back Matteo Darmian from Torino seeming to spell the end for Rafael at United.

Portuguese giants Benfica were the early favourites for his signature, while Italian side Roma were the latest club linked with a swoop.

But French newspaper L’Equipe claimed on Sunday that the Brazilian had instead agreed terms with Lyon, with the move set to be completed this week.

Rafael, who has just 12 months remaining on his United contract, is allegedly set to fly across the channel and could complete a medical with the club on Monday.
